Human Design System
Like astrology, Human Design starts with your date, time, and location of birth to determine the positions of the planets at your birth. Unlike astrology, Human Design calculates a second ‘birth’ date as 88 degrees of the sun prior to your physical birth and correlates the planetary positions to 64 divisions of the sky, called gates, rather than the 12 signs of the zodiac. These 64 gates are from the Chinese divination system called the I Ching, and are further subdivided into 6 lines. The 64 gates relate to positions within a diagram called the ‘bodygraph’. The bodygraph is like a map or schematic of nine energy centers and their interconnections.

The presence of a planet in a gate indicates that the gate in the bodygraph is activated. The interconnections between centers are called channels and whenever gates at both ends of a channel are activated, the channel and the two interconnected centers are said to be ‘defined’. Wherever channels and centers are defined, it shows us what is reliable and consistent. Centers and channels that are not defined are said to be ‘open’. While there are an incredible number of variations of definition, the most significant and practical implications are the classification of a configuration into type and inner authority. Type translates into a corresponding strategy for how we can approach life compatibly with our genetics.

There are many kinds of inner authority, however, the main classifications are splenic, sacral, and emotional. The combination of strategy and inner authority allow us to make decisions that are compatible with our genetic makeup.
Openness
Our openness can be a source of suffering or wisdom, depending upon our understanding and use of our type, strategy, and authority. Each of the centers that are open lead to ‘not-self’ mental strategies. These not-self strategies tend to be the source of a great deal of suffering and confusion. As the definition and openness in our charts represents our genetic makeup, they give rise to attractions and repulsions. We are genetically attracted to what is different from us.
For example, people with open solar plexus centers, the seat of emotions, are frequently attracted to people with a defined solar plexus center. Open centers take in energy from other people and amplify it. Without understanding this, the open solar plexus person can get carried away with an emotion such as anger and lash out at others. By recognizing that this feeling is actually someone else’s, the open solar plexus person can simply observe the feeling without identifying with it or acting on it. This can lead to the development of wisdom about the emotions of others.
So much of our lives are built on our everyday decisions. By knowing and using our inner authority, each of those little decisions keep us on track in our lives. Awareness of the not-self strategies allows us to pull back from those areas of our lives that simply do not work for us.
